I teach at a school that is 69% free and reduced lunch. 50% of our population are Spanish speaking. They are wonderful and deserving children.

I am faced with a dwindling school budget. I am using as many recyclable items as possible. My kids have fantastic imaginations and can happily make art out of junk! We have made many projects with discarded materials.

The fourth grade plans on making "Aliens" out of recycled and found objects. The school staff has been collecting juice bottles and cardboard tubes all summer in anticipation of this "Invasion". I plan on having the students write about their alien and tell why the aliens are invading our school. We will collaborate their stories and post the entire story near the aliens which will be on display near the office. I have collected many "landfill items" to start this project. My students would benefit from this project because they will have the ability to use many materials I do not have on my shelves. Our brushes are fraying, and we have tempera paint but not acrylic. We will need to use acrylic because it will adhere to the sculptures. The glue guns will be useful as I have one high temperature glue gun, but the students will not be able use it because it is dangerous! The low temperature glue guns will enable the students to glue all by themselves! The students also need paper clay and plaster gauze to complete the project.

Your help will show students that there are those who care about the arts. It will also show them that they can create art out of almost anything. So many of my students come from poverty. The most creative people are those who have little but are able to create a lot.
