For a moment, I heard the sound of twenty pencils scratching against the looseleaf paper. I teach fifth grade in rural New Mexico, and for a moment, I didn't hear groans when I asked my students to write in their journals, but I did hear the silence of students absorbed in a writing assignment.

I had given each student a photograph, from which they were to write a story describing the "Who, What, When, Where and Why." They were enthralled with this writing process, so different from a dry five-paragraph essay they were usually asked to write. These students were able to see the writing process broken down into manageable parts.

My students need copies of the AP Style Guide and a copy of the Adobe Design programs in order to achieve the goal of learning writing while creating a finished product that they can share with the entire community.

As a reporter and then as an editor, I learned first-hand how a newspaper is run. I live for the hectic rush of deadlines, late-night coffee runs, and the camaraderie of a team of people putting together an issue. As an editor, I was amazed every day to pick up the paper we had crafted the night before. Journalism allowed me to write stories that fascinated me, and allowed me to understand something more about my school and my community. I wasn't only informing other people, I was informing myself. I want my students to discover the process of writing, not simply as something to be tested on a standardized test, but something that can empower them as citizens in their community.
