MORE "I teach a diverse and interesting group of third grade students who have a wide range of interests and abilities.
Our students need to be exposed to a variety of literature in order to be better readers and writers. While our texts provide us with short stories, we need to supplement those texts with rich literature. The book that I am asking for, "Hate That Cat," is written entirely in free verse poetry. It shows writing from a student to a teacher, and references many classic poets as well. It is beautifully written.
I have always taught a unit about writing poetry because I find that it is a form of authorship that frees a lot of my students who struggle with writing. It gives them the ability to deeply express themselves without the bonds of conventional prose.
In this book, the student who is writing the poetry finds that it helps him to express some very difficult issues and emotions that he is dealing with. I know that many of my students will connect easily with this book. Your gift will do so many things for my students. First, you will allow all of the students to hold a book in their hands. You cannot imagine the deeply moving experience of having a classroom full of children able to share in the same literature together. Second, you will help me teach a deeper unit on reading, writing, and publishing poetry than I have ever done before. Third, you will make a gift that lasts beyond this school year and into many to come. HIDE My students need 30 copies of the book "Hate That Cat" by Sharon Creech. Mrs. P.'s Classroom:
