I teach 8th grade Social Studies in an inner city charter school.
My students are always looking for new ways to fund school activities that are not funded by the school. They also know that our parents do not always have the time nor means to take students to get supplies, so they want to make supplies more accessible for the students.
My students want to learn about economics in a hands-on way. They identified the need for school supplies on a daily basis. They understand that the students in our school are not always able to go to the store to replace lost or broken school supplies. They want to set up a school store to help out their fellow classmates and learn how the world of economics work. Their desire is to use the profits to replenish their merchandise, and help other students with fees for field trips.
Your help will ensure that my students can open their store without a hefty overhead. You will also help them learn how to manage their finances and the importance of giving back to their community. Students will use a percentage of their profit for a service project. Money will also be used to pay for positive reinforcement parties.
My students need poster board, markers, colored pencils and #2 pencils.
Mrs. D. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dear Martin, charmaine, Amy, M. Giant and M. Edium, Ramona (kivafriends.org) and Anonymous Donor,
Wow, I am so excited about your generosity. I never really thought this would happen. I will spend the holiday season putting the lessons together so that the students can open their store after Christmas break. Thank you for giving me thee opportunity to use a real life situation to teach history in terms my students will understand. You have rejuvenated me right now. You don't know how much i appreciate your kindness.
With gratitude, Mrs. D.
On Jan 4, 2010, Mrs. D. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
"I think it's great that this project combines the experience of buying and selling, the meeting of a real need in the school, and the ability to take the money earned from the sales and decide what to do with it."
"Thank you for your support. We are getting closer every day. M. Edium, you are so right. Everyone should have fun. I will do my best to see that it happens."
