"I teach at a fifth grade Empowerment school. Our philosophy is that we believe all students can learn if we allow them to find their interests and build a foundation. Our school made AYP last year because of the dedication of our teachers and the commitment of our students. However, the male population that passed the reading CRT was very low.
Let's face it, not many male students like to read. They do not enjoy curling up with a book and falling into the story. We are losing the male student's interests in books because they are spending a majority of their time watching TV and playing video games. They do not have the resources at home to go to the library and find books they like. At school we are not able to provide books that they like more than one at a time. I decided to bring my copy of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief from home and I read the male students a chapter. The loved it! They loved the sword fights, the different Olympian God's and their powers and personalities, and most of all they liked that it was a fast paced book.
My solution to getting the male students motivated to read is to provide class sets of the Percy and the Olympians series, The Library Card, Swindle, and Alabama Moon. These books are full of actions, adventures, comedy, sword fights, learning right from wrong, races, heroics and everything else that boys enjoy. A copy of every book for every series would allow us to have small groups discussions, book studies and it would also allow for both male and female students to read the books simultaneously.
Your help will ensure that male students that come through my classroom will continue to learn the love of reading through high interest books. The male students will be provided with books that capture their desire for adventure and action. I want them to be exposed to worlds filled with imagination and lessons. These books will give them this opportunity.
My students need 30 copies each of 8 books, including 5 titles from the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series" and "Alabama Moon" by Watt Key.
Dear dianne, Nicole R., Monika, kendra, Meagan, Sarah, Jennifer, The Lincy Foundation and Anonymous Donors,
Your generous donations have made the students in my classroom so happy. When the boxes arrived with Barnes and Noble written on the side I heard, "Did you get us new books?! Yes!", "Ohhh that book looks really fun to read. Can I read the back and see what it's about?". After I unwrapped all the books and placed them on the special bookshelf I could hardly keep up with all of the students asking to check them out. Students that are in the grade level below our grade level walk by and want to read them also. It makes me so proud to see all the students so happy about reading new and exciting books. Without your help we would still be reading, but there wouldn't be the level of excitement that is in our room right now. Thank you again from all of us for your generous gifts.
With gratitude, Mrs. R.

Dear dianne, Nicole R., Monika, kendra, Meagan, Sarah, Jennifer, The Lincy Foundation and Anonymous Donors,
Your donation to our classroom is so wonderful! All of the students have been waiting patiently for their wish list to be funded and you have made that wish come true. The students will be able to check these books out and actually have something to read at home for homework. We have been practicing our reading strategies and can't wait to put them to work while reading these high interest books. We all thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being so generous!
With gratitude, Mrs. R.
On Jan 5, 2010, Mrs. R. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
"My mother is a reading teacher and would sit in bead with me every night and read to me, instilling a deep love for reading. She has told me about her efforts to get her male students excited about reading as well. Reading is so important and can add so much to a child's life, so this is my small way of helping the cause! Good luck!"
"Thank you very much Donor, Reis and Jennifer. :-)"
