"Children need a chance to explore and express what is in their hearts. They need to know that their thoughts and emotions are important. The best way I can think of to help them do just that is by exploring poetry.

I teach a class of Kindergarten English Language Learners in a low-income school in Massachusetts. All of my students speak Spanish as a first language.

After taking a class this summer about teaching poetry, I couldn't wait to get back to school and begin filling my students' lives with poetry. In fact, I started brainstorming ways to make my classroom environment and activities more conducive to poetry. As I began to set up my classroom, the first thing I looked for was a space to set up my "What We Say Is Poetry" wall, where students' poetic words will be collected and displayed.

During the class I also dreamed about all of the wonderful poetry books I could share with my students. That's where you come in. To spread all of this poetry excitement, I need a variety of books to share with the class, as well as an organized place to store them.

By donating to this project, you will help young English Language Learners develop a love for poetry. You will help them develop their vocabularies in both English and Spanish. You will give them a better understanding of language. Best of all, you will give them a chance to explore and express what is in their hearts!

My students need a book display and 11 poetry books, including "Confetti: Poems for Children", by Pat Mora and "A Fire in My Hands", by Gary Soto.

Dear Causecast and Bryna,
I was blown away when I found out that you had donated to my project.  I have been anxious to share poetry with my kindergarten students, but have not had many great resources to do so.  I am thrilled that now my class will have a wealth of beautiful poetry books and a special place to store them.

These resources will allow my students to develop a love of poetry and language.  I am especially glad that I will be able to share bilingual poems with my students.  As they are learning English, it is important for them to maintain their Spanish and to be able to express themselves in both languages.  These bilingual books will help them to do just that.

I am so grateful that you share my interest in developing a love for poetry in students.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

With gratitude,
Mrs. V.
