Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Children need a chance to explore and express what is in their hearts. They need to know that their thoughts and emotions are important. The best way I can think of to help them do just that is by exploring poetry.
I teach a class of Kindergarten English Language Learners in a low-income school in Massachusetts. All of my students speak Spanish as a first language.
After taking a class this summer about teaching poetry, I couldn't wait to get back to school and begin filling my students' lives with poetry. In fact, I started brainstorming ways to make my classroom environment and activities more conducive to poetry. As I began to set up my classroom, the first thing I looked for was a space to set up my "What We Say Is Poetry" wall, where students' poetic words will be collected and displayed.
During the class I also dreamed about all of the wonderful poetry books I could share with my students. That's where you come in. To spread all of this poetry excitement, I need a variety of books to share with the class, as well as an organized place to store them.
By donating to this project, you will help young English Language Learners develop a love for poetry. You will help them develop their vocabularies in both English and Spanish. You will give them a better understanding of language. Best of all, you will give them a chance to explore and express what is in their hearts!
