Sensational Science for Serious 2nd Grade Researchers

My students need 5 precision school balances, 5 sets of hexagonal weights, 5 sets of metric measuring spoons, tuning forks and a classroom magnet lab kit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As you can see from the picture I work with some very serious scientists. In this picture, we had just finished presenting what the students know about safety equipment and each group was writing what they learned. I am a 2nd grade teacher from Texas and this is my 9th year at the school. We are a low income and Title 1 school. I can not imagine working anywhere else. Each year my students teach me so much about myself and how I can become a better teacher that I decided I needed to do more for them. This is why I am writing about my sensational 2nd grade scientists.

My students have exceptional goals for the future. They want to be doctors, dentists, teachers, etc. My students know that the science and math they learn today will help them reach those career goals later in life. My serious scientists need real science equipment. Unfortunately, our school just does not have the money to buy the supplies we need.

It would be wonderful for my students to have access to tools that are closely related to ones they will use in high school and college. So we are asking for 5 precision balances and hexagonal weights to use with our math and science activities. We will then be able to measure such things as lunch, match box cars, the lizard that lives in the front office or any other things my students can dream up. This year we have also added experiments with magnets to help the students understand force in a hands on way. To go along with force we study sound and how it travels. In the past we have used rulers and glasses of water. This year I would like to include tuning forks to expose my students to other tools.

I have great expectations for my students. I know they will go on to do great things in life. While they are with me I want to expose them to as many opportunities as possible. With help from you, they can get hands on experiences that will drive home the concepts they need to be successful. I can show my students how to weight objects in the classroom, but I would rather them have an interactive environment that allows them to show me.
