This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are learning to love literature more every day! I teach 10th grade English/Language Arts in a high-need community where students have made it to my class without even a basic knowledge of literary terms.
While grading a daily quiz after a lesson on point of view, I realized that my 10th graders had no idea what a narrator was, much less how to differentiate between 3rd person omniscient point of view and 3rd person limited point of view. With less than 180 days left and a long way to go, my students need a way to learn and keep track of numerous literary devices and techniques that they need to know to succeed in 11th grade, 12th grade, and college.
With something as simple as index cards and binder rings, my students will create Literary Lexicons. A Literary Lexicon is a collection of literary terms, devices, and techniques that will include definitions as well as examples from literature and their own work that students will add to throughout the year. These Lexicons will help my students stay organized and provide a valuable study tool that they can use this year and in years to come.
With your help, my students will be able to not only tell you that the device I used in my title is alliteration, but also to give you an example from literature and tell you why it's effective. Thanks for your support!
