Active Learning with Technology

My math and economics classes need an interactive tablet PC, so students can interact digitally with myself and each other during class inquiry.

Picture an average day in the life of a current teenager... Jasmine briefly pauses her iPod and puts down her digital Kindle Reader (or PSP) in order to text message her friends on her iPhone while she sits in the passenger seat of her father's car. They arrive at a stop-light, and she looks up momentarily to notice pedestrians walk across the street while the digital "walk" sign counts down the number of seconds that remain for crossing. Suddenly, she remembers that she forgot to print out her book report! However, she doesn't panic, because the file is saved on the 2G pen drive that she wears around her neck. Her father pulls up to Jasmine's high school entrance. She hugs her father goodbye and reminds him to email their digital pictures of the weekend's camping trip to grandma and send the Evite for her graduation party to all of her cousins. This is clearly any arbitrary day in the 21st century. Then, Jasmine walks into my math class, turns off her cell phone, takes out her books and writing supplies, and watches me (the teacher) as I stand behind the deteriorated wooden podium in front of the chalk board in order to begin reviewing the prior evening's pre-calculus homework. An outgoing classmate of Jasmine's asks me to write out the steps to a particular problem, and so I grab a stick of chalk and begin writing out the steps to the solution. The chalk accidentally screeches on the board, causing several of the students to grimace from the high-pitched scratching noise. Another student coughs from the chalk dust, some others giggle because I unknowingly transferred some chalk on the backside of my skirt when I leaned against the board, and I notice that Jasmine seems to be struggling to keep her eyes open in order to stay awake. This could be any arbitrary day in the last couple centuries. No wonder teachers today struggle to motivate active learning in their students! Is it really a surprise that our students are struggling to stay awake and focused when they walk out of their "digital worlds" and into a classroom that could easily have looked similar to one from the 1930s? It seems unreasonable (at least to me) to expect our students to have the most effective learning experiences they can when their academic environment has not kept up with the technological developments of the other parts of their lives. In an age where we touch screens to check in for flights, download television shows wirelessly to our cell phones, and use satellite-based handheld devices to get directions to the nearest ATM, it seems absurd that a math teacher would teach our future leaders, scholars, innovators, and workers by writing on a chalk board. High school students today will soon be entering into universities and workplaces that require digital interaction. Knowing this, their academic experience should involve active engagement with digital devices, as well. Therefore, I would like to acquire a tablet PC for my classroom. It will be used in conjunction with an LCD video projector, borrowed from our school's library, and eventually, with handheld student "clickers". Tablet PCs, when hooked to an LCD projector, allow images to be projected on a classroom screen. However, students are able to interact with the displayed content using the digital "pen" that accompanies the tablet PC. That is, instead of getting out the dusty eraser and stick of chalk to solve problems on a board that becomes more illegible due to chalk dust build-up as the day wears on, the teacher and students are able to actively engage with displayed content using digital colors, graphics, computing technology, and documents of varying formats and sources. My proposal for this digital tablet has been rejected by my school district several times, due to financial crisis in funding for Michigan public schools. Our students come from low- to middle-income families, with 40% of the students come from family incomes that qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. In other words, my district, community, nor I can fund adequate technology for our students. My students deserve the opportunity to learn in a modern academic environment that keeps them engaged and provides them with preparation that is technologically comparable to less needy districts. Thank you in advance for your help!
