Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You may have heard of ghosts, goblins, and the boogey-man, but have you heard of the dreaded, "pencil monster"? The pencil monster is a truly evil creature that lurks around our classroom after all of the children have left. When our 2nd grade classroom is quiet, he creeps out of his hiding place, and gobbles up all of the pencils! Sometimes, he leaves us short little pencils that are too small to use. Sometimes, he nibbles the erasers off of the pencils leaving us nothing to erase our mistakes with. Then, there are those nights when he must have been REALLY hungry, and our pencils have completely vanished the next day when we get to school!
Unfortunately, a lot of us live in low-income homes. That means that our parents aren't readily able to buy new pencils for us when the pencil monster strikes. Our teacher gets us pencils and new erasers when she can, but we go through so many! It's hard for her to keep up. We'd really like to be able to have some pencils available for us whenever we need them. That way, if the pencil monster does strike, it's no big deal! Our teacher will have a supply of pencils just waiting for us to use! She said that if this proposal gets funded, she'll even have enough to give us some to keep at home. This way, our pencils don't get lost in transit between home and school! Hooray!
We're requesting pencils and erasers for our everyday classroom use. These pencils will be freely available for all 70-some students in the 2nd grade whenever we need them. Our teacher is also requesting a new pencil sharpener so that we can keep our new pencils nice and sharp.
