Imagine a student sharing a book she has been reading. She is struggling with a word... can almost work it out. And then she realizes - she has to take the end off the word! Now imagine she is able to take this book and instantly display the page on the whiteboard - for the entire class to see. Right there and then, she is able to show all her peers the strategy she has used - so that they may use it too - because her book is projected for everyone to see. This is exactly what the ELMO document camera enables students to do! With the ELMO, students and teachers can take anything essential to learning - the book they are working with, the memoir they are editing, the long division problem they have just worked out - and display them on the whiteboard. I teach a general education fourth grade classroom, with nearly 30 students - and not only are these students at different points in their learning... they also tend to learn differently. With the ELMO, they are able to share their different strategies with each other "on the fly." One boy might show how he solved a multiplication problem using "lattice multiplication" while another might show how she used "partial products." One might show how one paragraph of their book helped them make a prediction, while another might show how this same paragraph helped them learn a new word. This happens instantly - there is no need for photocopies, scanning, or leaving the classroom - thus enabling you to make full use of that teachable moment as it happens. With your help... with the ELMO document camera... different learning strategies become a boon, embraced so that students learn from each other in addition from the teacher. Books and work become shared experiences. It is the type of tool that helps create and foster the trust of learning communities - wherein any moment can be captured and learned from - by anybody... and everybody!
