""Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." Emilie Buchwald said this and I believe very true. However, without the reading material for parent and child to share this will not happen. In my fourth grade class of regular education and special education students we have a very high degree of poverty.
While I can provide great books in class for my students (thanks to DonorsChoose), most of my students have nothing to read at home. I am hoping that you can help remedy that situation. My students face a lot of challenges that center around living with poverty daily. Almost all my students come to school with no supplies and rely on me to provide them with the basics. Sometimes these basics go beyond pencils, folders, and notebooks and can include food and clothing. Despite these challenges, I still have students that really want to learn and achieve. One of my goals as a teacher is to help them become better learners by cultivating a love for reading in my students.
I have a very nice library in my classroom that we use for in-school reading but learning should go beyond the classroom. I can't tell you how many times parents have asked me for books they can read with their children at home. These parents want to help their children but do not necessarily have the means to do so. I lend them books from my library but I want to give them something they can keep.
To this end, I am asking for Time Weekly for kids. A news magazine that arrives weekly in my classroom. I can send this home with students to read with their families. The great thing about Time Weekly is that it is a current events type magazine that parents can read with their kids on a regular basis. It even has fun comprehension questions inside the magazine so parents can work on skills with their children. In addition, I am also asking for one quality chapter book to send home for keeps with each student. I know it would mean a lot to the students to have a book that they own!
I know this gift will make a difference in my students lives. Learning may start at school, but students should have an opportunity to apply their knowledge at home. Please help me empower my students to become life-long learners and lovers of reading. HIDE My students need 4 leveled book sets and 25 Time For Kids magazine subscriptions.
