Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an excited Art teacher teaching in a community that is rich in cultural art, but not in funds. The students are excited to come to Art and love using new materials such as paints, clay, pastels, and collage. Sadly we are currently able to only use markers, crayons, and colored pencils (a.k.a clean materials).

Our school is in a very urban area where it has been found necessary for the students to wear uniforms, which are pricey for low income families. This makes it difficult for the students to really express themselves in Art. Many of them have HUGE fears of getting their uniform dirty because they know they only have so many shirts and they can't be replaced. We had disposable aprons last year which I found in an old science lab, they were very difficult to tie without breaking and were continually falling apart. This really restricted what kinds of materials we could use in class. I am afraid to use anything that might stain or create even a temporary spot. Students are asked to bring old shirts to wear but many of them cannot spare even that. I hope you can help our student have the freedom to express themselves.

By having a permanent set of aprons in my classrooms (I have two rooms in my school's buildings PreK-2 & 3-5) the students will be free to experiment without fear of dirtying their clothes. Many schools have gym uniforms to keep their everyday uniforms clean, so why not aprons for art. If we have sturdy aprons for Art we can do things like oil paintings, acrylic painting, clay, and maybe even finish the unfinished murals in our school. I feel that the students will feel like the real artists that they are if they had some sturdy aprons. Plus these would be easy for me to clean and would cause no stress on our families. The best part about these aprons is THEY CAN BE USED FOR YEARS TO COME!!!!

You are the ones who can allow these students to open up their world of creativity without any worries. I pray that you will see what a simple apron can do to allow our students to flourish in the artistic community they live in. Our students would be amazingly grateful for all that you can give, these aprons will be keys into a new and creative world that you have blessed us with.
