"I teach Reading to a seventh grade at an elementary school in a low-income/high-need Pennsylvania school district. My district uses the Success For All reading program that encourages students to learn reading strategies by reading many books over the course of the program. So instead of learning 'about' reading, my students are learning 'through' reading!
My classroom did not come equipped with any type of pre-installed classroom furniture. Therefore, we do not have a book self to house our books for the Reading program. The only counter space I have is from a radiator and a sink, and both places are not good places to house books as the water from the sink gets the books wet, even when in boxes, and the sunlight from above the radiator fades the book covers. Having a small bookshelf in the classroom would be very useful in helping to keep the class floor free from "book clutter." The reading books would be housed in bins (one bin per group) and the bins would be housed on the book shelf. I've asked for Birthday Pencils as motivators for my students--every day there is a writing prompt relating to the days reading selection. I want students to look forward to using the special birthday pencil to make the writing time more motivating and exciting. Please assist me in making my Reading program a success by enabling me to organize my students' materials in one safe place. Also, they would absolutely love their birthday pencils! HIDE My students need a bookcase, storage tubs, a set of Fraction Stax and a supply of Happy Birthday Message Pencils.
