"Girls like to interact! I teach two year-long Algebra classes that have only female students. My students are upperclassmen and have not experienced much success in mathematics. Our school is considered a high-need school. Additionally, my students must pass a high-stakes Algebra End-of-Course test to fulfill graduation requirements.

Historically, females do not pursue careers in mathematics or engineering. Furthermore, girls tend to think that they cannot "do" math well. My school is attempting to improve the understanding, interest, and performance of females in algebra by allowing them to take algebra in a single gender class.

The resources that I have requested will be used by the girls to create their own interactive notebook in which they will be able to use color and design to help them graphically organize their algebra notes. Girls tend to be more visual as learners, and having these materials will help them learn Algebra easier by accommodating their learning style. They will be actively engaged while working with their interactive notebooks, and will be thinking about and elaborating on algebraic concepts. Additionally, the girls will be answering journal topics in their notebook, which further addresses the particular needs of females, as they tend to be more verbal than males.

Your help will make it possible for my female students to learn and experience algebra in such a manner that they will be successful. Your help will allow them to understand that Algebra is not a "masculine" subject, but a subject that they can experience successfully. With the budget crunch in our state, our school can only provide the bare necessities for instruction. Your donation will allow my female students to have access to materials which will make Algebra less intimidating and more fun.

My students need paper, scissors, markers, colored pencils and gluesticks.

Dear Ashley, Sofya, Henry and Nakeisha, lynn, Kate, alison, Aveen, Amber, Duke Energy - Carolinas and Anonymous Donor,

Thank you so much for your generous donation. My students use the markers and highlighters everyday, and the other materials at least twice weekly. The colorful paper helps their graphic organizers stand out, and the markers and highlighters help them to emphasize the important information. Now the students ask me if they can take notes! That is a dramatic change.

Our school system has had to make budget cuts due to the current economic situation, and without your support, my all-girl classes would not have these materials. The girls are enjoying math, and are beginning to feel confident with their skills. The materials that you have provided have allowed them to become more successful in algebra.

You have made an impact on my students that will reach far beyond this school year. Because of your donation, they feel that math is subject that girls can excel in.

With gratitude,
Ms. A.

Dear Ashley, Sofya, Henry and Nakeisha, lynn, Kate, alison, Aveen, Amber, Duke Energy - Carolinas and Anonymous Donor,

I can't fully express my appreciation and thanks for your donation to my project. It is heartwarming to see that you share my vision for making girls feel comfortable and confident with Algebra.

The materials that you have funded will enable students to create notebooks that complement their learning styles, and will allow them to create graphic organizers that will make difficult concepts more easily understood. The girls love being decorative and creative, and the markers, colored pencils, and other supplies will facilitate their creativity when working with mathematical concepts.

Thank you so much. Every day I have been telling the girls how close we were to being funded. Your support will empower these girls as their skills in Algebra become strong.

With gratitude,
Ms. A.
