"I am a self-contained teacher in rural eastern North Carolina. My students have moderate intellectual and functional disabilities. As a special education teacher, one of my primary goals is to arm my students with the essential daily-living skills they will need to lead an independent adult life.
As children with disabilities, my students face additional obstacles to master the daily skills needed to survive independently. It is a journey that we face every day in my classroom. My students also face the overwhelming challenge of completing this journey in a low-income community, surrounded by poverty both at home and at school. We also have few resources at school that are specifically designed with my students in mind. Unfortunately, this has resulted in many of my students approaching adolescents as either emerging readers or non readers.
I am in need of a program that will empower my students using literacy strategies based on their needs. I am requesting the Early Literacy Skills Builder to teach my students how to read, and ultimately fall in love with all aspects of literacy. My students have learned to identify their letters and some of my students also know the corresponding sounds. However, on average we have great difficulty blending sounds to form words, and making that connection to increase fluency.
My students have learned to identify high frequency sight words (the number of words learned varies by each student), and some of my students are able to identify these words in simple texts. However, many of my students have not been able to identify these words when the text becomes more complex or when used in the community.
The program is a research-based and language-rich literacy curriculum for children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. The program is multilevel and anticipates that students will work on their own pace. It was created specifically with my students in mind! Your help will make it possible for my students to go grocery shopping, read the newspaper, access public transportation, and much much more.
You generosity will take my students one step closer to living an independent adult life.
My students need a research-based and language-rich literacy program designed specifically for children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities.
The cost of this proposal is $914, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear Elyse, Rodney & Gail Sadler, William, Cathy, Cara and David Kirby, Deborah, Mark, Ross, Nancy, Anna, Amber, Elizabeth, paula, Celeste, Martha, Eva, Galina, Anastasia, Terkie, Paige, Jacqueline, Jeremy, Ximena, christine, Bella, Family, Senovia, Peggy, Courtney, D Thompson, wanda, Brandon, Linda Wharton, Sharon and Anonymous Donors,
Thank you so much for choosing to contribute and care about my classroom. Your generosity
is very much appreciated. My students will now have the opportunity to experience literacy using strategies based on their specific needs. By using these resources, my students will begin to develop the skills they need to become productive and independent citizens. I also hope that it will result in a new found love of reading and literature for my students. Thank you again for your generosity. I am very excited to share these resources with my students. With gratitude, Ms. S.

"For the past three years, I have had the pleasure of working down the hall from Ms. Shelton. In that time, I have not only seen a great transformation in her students, but in our EC program. Additionally, Ms. Shelton has inspired literacy in my own classroom by encouraging my students to work hard to meet their reading goals by doing so herself. Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do! "
