I teach at an IB school in southern California. Our focus is to teach children about people from all over the world, by celebrating holidays, learning about their heroes, and appreciating their music, art, and most of all culture. I teach first grade, and my little ones LOVE learning about different cultures. Every year each class chooses a different country and studies it for 5 weeks. At the close of those 5 weeks we put on a 45 minute presentation to the rest of the school about the culture we studied. I have chosen to study India with my 5 and 6 year olds because of it's rich culture, beauty, history, and ethical inequities. I want this country to come alive for my students. I want them to have ACTUAL things from the country to show off. Last year they used a lot of digital images and put together a phenomenal presentation- but they were lacking in REAL artifacts. I know how much these REAL objects will mean to the kids. Seeing a statue of Ganesh will mean so much more to them than a picture. Young children need to touch things, not just see them. Think of the power behind this project.... creating children who do not laugh at differences, but celebrate them, excite in them, and are curious about them. The world will be a far better place when these children- who are truly internationally minded- are running the show. Thank you for investing in their future! My students need items that are authentic from India- including statues, fabric table cloths, and tea lights in order to celebrate holidays, and every day life with realia from the country rather than drawn pictures.
