My hard-working 4th graders live in a small, rural community. We are a high poverty Title 1 school and we are proud of our high Native American population.
Nine and ten year olds need a place of their own to learn, so each student having a place to sit would meet a basic need. Having enough desks and chairs are essentials that every student should have in order to learn. My kids are anxious to learn, yet the lack of enough desks/chairs is a major stumbling block. I have also duct taped several of my old desks and chairs in order to provide seating for students. Our school is "busting at the seams" as more and more families move into the area, which has not yet been hit extremely hard by the recession.
I am prepared and eager to teach as many students as my room will handle, but with more families moving into our school so quickly, I need additional desks and chairs. This will greatly benefit my students because they will have a "place to call their own" and to help them stay organized. I will also be able to replace old, worn-out desks, in which duct tape is presently being used to keep them standing and to keep them from falling over on students while they work.
By generously giving during a time of need, you will not only affect my students in this year, but YOUR INVESTMENT WILL LAST FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS! I know this because all of my present desks/chairs are at least that old. Just think of how much your donation will help educate children, because you will have fulfilled a very basic need...a place to learn!
