"Reading more than music notes in music class? Of course! As a K-2 General Music Teacher, I do my best to further the important goal of promoting literacy with all of my students on a very regular basis. Our school is considered to be at a moderate poverty level, and every extra minute of reading stories to the students, and having the students take turns reading to each other, is time well spent. With so many terrific authors, there are a very large number of great books that are directly about music. Stories about musical topics like rhythm, beat and the staff are an awesome way to reinforce these topics. Books that relate the lives of composers and musicians from the past and present engage students. With such a culturally diverse school, books that present songs in other languages and reference music of other countries make connections between social studies, reading, language arts, music, and more!

My students adore, and benefit from, learning about new people, places and concepts in many ways. One terrific way is through books. Unfortunately my budget for each school year is $0, and there is little opportunity to create a library of books with musical connections.

I would like to buy several books to start a collection that could be used throughout each and every school year, benefiting more than 550 students that pass through my door each week. This collection will help my students to make cross-curricular connections, give me another way to promote literacy in music class and when I teach a small reading group each day, and allow the students to learn about all sorts of musical styles, the influences of culture on music, composers and artists, songs, instruments, and many musical concepts.

Your help will make it possible for my students to have a collection of books available that will help them to learn about numerous aspects of music while helping to further their literacy skills and make numerous connections between all of the subjects they study throughout the day. The books will be a re-usable tool that will be beneficial to a very large number of students. In ten years time, the books would be enjoyed by more than 2,000 students! Even in one year, if each student spent ten minutes reading from, or being read to out of, one of the requested books 30 weeks out of the school year, 165,000 minutes of reading would be accomplished! With that happening year after year, your help would not only be making an amazing, but also an everlasting, impact!

My students need 30 music-themed books, including biographies, "Freddie the Frog and the Mysterious Wahooooo" and "The Daddy Longlegs Blues".

Ms. S. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Jan 30, 2010
Dear barbara, Sandra, Susan, Pamela, Marlene, Cate, Mary, Manuela, Karen, Patricia and Barbara,

I cannot even begin to tell you all how grateful I am to have had this project funded. My students love to have books read to them, to read out loud themselves, and enjoy even more when we can add musical sounds to the books, sing songs that relate to them, and see instruments and musicians we have learned about in class appear in the stories. Luckily, there are numerous children's books directly about, or that lend themselves to adding, music. Literacy is very important, and I am happy to be able to incorporate reading in music class to help my students in every way I can.

I am certain that my students are going to be very excited to see all of the wonderful books that were funded in this project! I was practically jumping up and down when I saw the the project had been funded myself. I am so thankful that Adam Lambert chose to support this site, as it is a very valuable resource for teachers who receive a minimal amount funds, or even no money at all, from their schools to buy supplies. I am also extremely grateful that Adam made such a positive impression on all of you, and that you were generous with my project in celebration of his birthday!

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!! You made my day, week, month, year!!

With gratitude,
Ms. S.
