My students need a magnetic teaching manipulative set that includes 95 large magnetic pattern block pieces, 121 large magnetic place values pieces, and 102 large magnetic fraction manipulatives.

"Wow," is one of my favorite words to hear in the classroom on any given day! That magical word means my first grade students are engaged and excited about what they are experiencing. That magical word... hardly ever graces my ears during mathematics.

Like some other schools in New York City, my students are using the Everyday Mathematics Curriculum. In my opinion I work very hard to supplement the features I feel the program does not address. However, my students do not consistently have the supplies they need to visualize and experience the concepts they are expected to master. Unfortunately, I do not always have the money or resources to supplement the materials that are not provided. While I am thankful for the math manipulatives I am afforded, they are not always enough, applicable or effective with regard to the concepts my students and I are working to understand.

My mathematicians need to be able to see, feel, experience, and manipulate their materials in order for their learning to be meaningful. In my experience, when my students have the appropriate tools to understand a concept- true understanding and..."WOW" usually follows! The Giant Magnetic Teaching Manipulative Set will make my teaching, and their learning, visual, hands on, and meaningful. Additionally, this manipulative set will make the abstract vocabulary: "place value, ones, tens, hexagon, rhombus, fraction, one-fifth".... much more concrete. Mathematics is more than numbers and words. When true learning and understanding are the expectation...exploration is necessary!

A title is nothing more than a title if you don't have the tools and knowledge you need to perform the task. When they call me teacher and I don't have the materials to teach, then teacher is just a title. So when I call my curious first grade students "mathematicians" this year, it would be great if they actually had the tools to learn, grow, and conquer the challenges. Please help make it possible for my students to gain a better understanding of the concepts they are expected to learn, by providing them with the materials they need to visualize and experience mathematics.
