Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 9-12th grade mathematics at a continuation high school. Most of my students are from low income families and our school is a Title 1 school with 100% of our students on free or reduced lunch. Our students are transferred to our high school after being unable to succeed in a traditional high school setting. We provide extra support for our students and help them achieve their goals and attend college. They are all bright students who have failed to receive the support that they need.

My students need graphing calculators to explore higher level mathematics and to learn how to use a tool crucial to college success. My students are excited to be investigative young mathematicians! From rockets, to economics, game theory and beyond, they love to learn about how mathematics can be applied to real world situations. However they lack the technology that is needed to conduct these explorations and study their data. Graphing calculators will help close this gap and allow them to study real world phenomenon using real world tools. As a school we are excited to push our students, many who have been labeled as "failures", to achieve their full potential and attend college. Even though our students are ready to tackle the challenges of higher mathematics, they nor the school can afford graphing calculators. These tools have become incredibly important at the high school and college level and are now crucial to success on the SAT and several AP tests. Many college courses require graphing calculators and it is important that our students know how to use them.

I need five graphing calculators to facilitate group exploration for my students. We will use graphing calculators this year in an Algebra 2/Precalulus class. They will be used for studying properties of functions, predator-pray relationships and logistical modeling, data analysis in introductory AP statistics, and analytical aspects of trigonometric functions among other topics. Next year, we hope to offer AP Statistics (an unprecedented and ambitious goal for our school) and calculators are a required tool.

The relation between mathematics and it's application to the real world is an exciting dynamic connection that students become motivated to explore and investigate. Your donation will allow them to investigate this relationship using the same tools they will use in college.
