"Who has the best cooks out of all of the elementary schools in Wisconsin? I do! I teach students with a variety of moderate to severe special needs in grades 1-2 (some years 1-4). We are a public K-grade 8 school in the city.

My students need to learn functional skills to help them live independently. It takes them longer to learn, therefore, we start teaching functional skills at an early age and incorporate reading and math into this instruction. Unfortunately, we do not have the funding to provide everything they need. We have been fundraising by cooking and selling food to our staff so that we can take the city bus to local grocery stores to buy the ingredients we need to cook. We also use fundraising money to cook meals and invite our classroom families in to celebrate with us (e.g. Thanksgiving, Mom/Dad's Day, classroom staff retirement, etc.). My students love everything involved in their cooking instruction, from hopping on the city bus to serving the meals.

If we could get the supplies we need to cook and bake, it would help us earn more money for other field trips (e.g. holiday shopping, zoo, etc.) and to continue to invite our families to our school for family meals.

Please help us keep the Tasty Treats Kitchen open! Our kids love to cook and the families love to participate in family meals. The family meals have allowed the parents to network and develop friendships along with their kids. You could make the difference between Tasty Treats staying open and closing! Please consider helping us!

My students need items for cooking. We need take out containers (e.g. soup, sandwich, etc.), disposable utensils, serving trays, a double burner for cooking, gift cards for grocery stores, and other items/basic appliances (e.g. blender, hand mixer) for cooking/baking.

HIDE

Ms. H. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dear The Holmes/Caldwell/Morris Families,
I cannot fully express how much your kindness means to me! With your help, we will be able to continue our functional, daily living curriculum. We use hands-on cooking activities to teach our children with special needs to read, complete basic math, and to socialize. We will use the supplies from your donation to continue cooking to fundraise for community field trips and to bring our families in for special events (e.g.. Thanksgiving, Mothers' Day,&Fathers' Day). The parents greatly appreciate the chance to come in to spend extra time with their children, network with other families, and witness the pride their children have over their new skills.

I am grateful that others share the same vision as my classroom staff for our children. Teaching them functional skills will help them towards their goals of living as independently as possible. Your gift will be greatly appreciated by my students for many years to come!

With gratitude,
Ms. H.
