"Obesity is a serious health concern for children and adolescents. Obese children and adolescents are at risk for health problems during their youth and as adults. For example, during their youth, obese children and adolescents are more likely to have risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes) than are other children and adolescents. Some consequences of childhood and adolescent obesity are psychosocial. Obese children and adolescents are targets of early and systematic social discrimination. The psychological stress of social stigmatization can cause low self-esteem which, in turn, can hinder academic and social functioning, and persist into adulthood.
Obese children and adolescents are more likely to become obese as adults. Alarmingly, one study found that approximately 80% of children who were overweight at aged 10–15 years were obese adults at age 25 years.
In my fourth grade classroom, I am working to change these statistics. It is my goal to help my students adopt healthy eating and physical activity behaviors that are the keys to preventing obesity. To accomplish this goal, I am requesting a portion distortion poster, a classroom set of pedometers and tracking sheets, an inflatable food pyramid, and a life form body fat vest.
I will use each of these tools to teach my students the both the dangers of poor nutrition and obesity as well as healthy choices they can make to combat our societies environment that promotes increased food intake, non-healthful foods, and physical inactivity.
Thank you for your consideration of this project. Your donation will help my students begin a lifetime of wellness and optimum health and fitness.
My students need one portion distortion poster, 11 pedometers, a pedometer program, inflatable food pyramid, and one life form body fat vest.

Dear Nancy, Beth, Karen, Sue, Jeff, Gina, charmaine, Michelene, Zucker family, Angie, JenV, Erin, Laura H, Deborah and Anonymous Donor,
Thank you all so much for your very generous donations. My students and I are thrilled that this project was funded. They are very excited to receive the materials and begin a lifetime of healthy habits. I cannot stress enough to my students how important it is to make wise nutrition choices and exercise daily. It is going to make a world of difference having the necessary tools to teach them all they need to know to live healthy lives. Thank you, again, for your support. With gratitude, Ms. R.

"The "Bet Red" drive from tomatonation.com moved me to give, but *you* all inspired me. The school years are so very important in forming what you'll become, and I want you to have every opportunity possible to grow up healthy and dreaming. I don't want a lack of funding to keep you from exploring your futures. You *matter,* and I'm giving the funds to prove it!"
"Thank you so much Karen! I hope to give my students every opportunity at a healthy life and your generous donation is helping to make that possible."
