"I teach Civics and Economics. Our entire department works with 10th and some 11th graders. We are in a low economic area who was considered a low-performance school. Last year we worked very hard with our students to move out of the status being one of the bottom three low performance high schools. Our efforts were successful and are now we are located in the middle. Our goal is to be in the top three high performance high schools. The entire school is going to increase their content vocabulary. Every department are will integrate daily vocabulary and subject area to raise the over all student comprehension in ones subject area but also for the entire school. We are the Civics and Economics Department who must teach their students approximately 850 words for the content area and an additional 36 to help integrate daily comprehension words. We need to build on vocabulary in our society if we are to set a higher level of educational expectations for the future generations. Everyone in our country needs to know their rights and understand "our" government. We feel that if students have a good notebook for their vocabulary they will use it and write in it as directed. This particular notebook will give the students the ability to write the required definitions and use these words in comprehensive sentences along with their other vocabulary words the school wants to focus on. Our schools vision and goal is to empower our students with knowledge and comprehension for their future. It starts at the high school level. Teaching Civics and Economics is an extremely important subject, but even more now due to our economic situation that is occurring. We truly want to empower our students so they become ready for their future.
My students need to use this notebook to write definitions for 850 Civics and Economic vocabulary words and learn how to use them in a comprehensive sentence.

Dear Angie, Kristen, Jennifer, Debby, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Anonymous Donors,
I am so grateful to all of you for your generous donations. Our school is predominantly black and is located in a low-economic area so we are continuously striving to change the way we teach. We know all children can learn with the right atmosphere, but we are also struggling to change our image which was created from past occurrences.
All of our teachers are continuously striving to change the outlook of our school by using various new and innovative ways to teach. Yet, this one item that you have help fund for our students will enable them to create and write concepts that will become life lasting skills. When students write and associate their vocabulary to the abstract information as well as concrete, they create an affiliation that is stored as a long term memory Not only are they well versed in Civics but also in future English and literature classes to come. We are constantly striving to get our students to think and write using higher level thinking skills.
I just can not thank you enough in believing in my idea so I as well as the other Civics teachers who strive to make our students become successful. We all know that knowledge is an important tool that never fades when being taught vibrantly to our children.
Respectfully,
Mrs. K.
With gratitude, Ms. K.
