My students need snacks and a calm environment for a few different reasons. The students with emotional disturbances do well with edibles as positive reinforcements. Also, sometimes they just need some calories to get through.

My students have mild and moderate intellectual disabilities and emotional disorders. They are hardened by their exposure to violence, broken homes, juvenile halls, and the glamorization of gangs. My students are learning in a high generational poverty school where their worlds consist mainly of school and the small community they live in. The teachers at my school work diligently to open doors to worlds the students often don't know exist. I work to emphasize the importance of knowledge and learning to my students while integrating social skills in our everyday lessons.
My students are teenagers who experience things no child should ever know exists.
I wish you could see the joy and the gleam in their eyes when they accomplish a goal, on their own, that opens doors to worlds they never knew existed. Our school thrives on providing students the opportunities to dream and to know there is more out there for them than the small world in which they currently live.
I have included essential oils in this classroom wishlist because my students need a calm environment, also because they often come to class with dirty clothes and poor hygiene. It is my hope that the essential oils will help cover some of the odors that cause the students to feel self conscious.
We all know that food is a necessary component of fuel for the brain.
It is my hope to use the nutrient rich bars to help the students who do not get enough food from home. I would like to have snacks on hand to give to them when I can tell they are behind or fatigued because of hunger. I am hoping to use the candies as incentives for students to stay on task. In a behavioral class that I am taking, we are learning to find what reinforces good behaviors, and I have found that enjoyable edibles are a great reinforcer.
