My students need a Bookworm Rug.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Hello! I am a fifth grade teacher in the nation's capital. I work in a low socio-economic school. This upcoming year will be my 5th year at my school, and I will be implementing a new reading program. My students come to me with a lot of learning and economic deficiencies. However, I refuse to believe that the achievement gap cannot be closed. Therefore, I look down every possible avenue seeking help that will ensure that my students are successful academically and socially.
A portion of the reading program requires my students to sit on the floor to participate in morning meeting and to listen to read alouds. However, my classroom's floor is not the most desirable or comfortable place. It is hard and badly stained. I don't want the following excuses to hinder them from staying on task. I don't want to waste time convincing my lovely ones as to why they can't sit in a chair. I am sure that these words will ring in my ears..."I am not sitting on that dirty floor!" "The floor is too hard, and I can't concentrate!" They have enough to concern themselves with. So to alleviate the problem, a new rug would be the perfect solution.
I am asking for a 10'9" x 13'2" rug that will be used for my students to sit on and participate in a more intimate learning environment. This rug will be the place where they will meet in the morning to share their thoughts and discuss the stories that I will read to them. They will also be allowed to conduct independent and small group work on the rug. Therefore, the rug will be their ambassador of goodwill. Meeting in this manner helps them to develop better social skills and makes learning more meaningful. Research does show that if children are comfortable in their environment, they will blossom academically and socially.
Your help will most definitely ensure that my students will have a much desired meeting place to share their big ideas on reading and writing. Donors, my students need a rug to grow on.
