"I work with third graders in a title one public school. We are a high need community, I teach children ranging from gifted to special needs. Many of my students are non-native English speakers. Where does our food come from? A simple question that my students have no idea how to answer. Plastic wrapped meat, frozen vegetables, and canned peaches make it difficult to explain the origins of food. The slow food movement has sought to explain that we benefit from knowing how and where food comes from. Help me SHOW students in a real way, the process by which goat cheese is made. California has slashed our field trip funds, and my students will not be able to experience new things without donors like you. By visiting a self sustaining, organic dairy farm, my students will visit a place completely out of their daily experience. Most have never been to a farm, milked a goat, smelled manure or tasted fresh goat cheese. They will never forget such a amazing trip. They will cuddle goats, feed them, learn about gray water, and it will change them forever. I was able to take my class before, and I was shocked how it affected my students. They wrote, talked, and referenced the trip for the rest of the year! I can attest that this is a life changing trip. This trip helps my students to connect the dots in their own lives. They start to wonder, where does this come from? Was it made in a large factory? Was it grown on a tree, or in the ground? What animal or plant are they consuming? In an age of cheap fast food, only you can help my students slow down and smell the manure.
My students need a class trip to Harley Goat farms, an organic dairy. We need the cost of the bus and guided tour.
The cost of this proposal is $667, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear Amelia, Beth, Jenny Lerew, Lucky, colleen, John and Sandra,
I am so happy to be writing this! Wonderful donors like you change the lives of my students. They will hold a baby goat, smell manure, and taste goat cheese. For some of them, it will be the first time seeing green, open, spaces. I want to schedule the trip in early spring, because that's when the kids are born. We saw a live birth last year, and held two day old babies. The farm is so green, it is the perfect time to visit. I am sorry that you will have to wait so long for the thank you package, trust me, it will be worth the wait! Thank you again for you generosity. With gratitude, Mrs. S.

"I'm excited at the chance to help the students visit a farm and learn about slow food-I'm still learning about it, too.I grew up in Orinda and L.A. and didn't know anything about where good food comes from til I was much older-this will be both a fun, cool and an important experience. Enjoy! And eat well."

"Yes!! When I start this unit I ask the question, "Where does our food come from?" The answer is always the same, "the store." We are also working on our school's garden, trying to grow veggies and flowers. So thanks to you, my class may get to milk a goat! An experience they will never forget!"

"I gave to this project because you should know where your food comes from and who and what animals make it possible -- and you should have a chance to celebrate rural communities, too."

"Good point, city kids are amazed at the difference! They cannot get over the wide open spaces. We are hoping to go in the early spring, when everything is vibrant green. Thanks for your help, my students from last year are still talking about the trip! The farm makes quite an impression!"

"I gave because I had the experience of working at a dairy goat barn in college and it was amazing. Looking back on that experience, i am lucky to have had it. Hope your students enjoy their trip!"
