"I am a first grade teacher. My students come from many different economic and academic backgrounds. But one thing they all poses is that they are open and excited to learn new things.
Students at this age level are very inquisitive and open to learning everything they can about the world around them. They are especially interested in the other forms of life around them. They are like sponges when learning about the life cycle of plants and animals. They take what they learn and apply it to their life outside the classroom. This helps them make connections between their school life and their life in the outside world.
We are in need of a new incubator to hatch chicken and other bird eggs in our classroom. Once hatched, the babies will be kept in a brooder so we can continue to watch them grow and change and so we can learn how to properly care for them.
Hatching eggs in the classroom is very beneficial as it takes children through the life cycle of birds, from egg to bird. The children also use math skills in counting the days to hatching and watching the various stages in the development of the birds through charts and candling of the eggs. This project does not only benefit the students in my class but students school wide. Each class in our building tours our room before, during and after the hatching takes place. The excitement is indescribable. children in the building stop by before and after school to check on the process and many bring their parents in to see the process unfold. This project also builds a community of learning as parents are able to share with their children valuable information they have a bout this process through their own life experiences.
Your help will ensure that this project can continue. It will make a difference in a lot of children. You will make it possible for my children and the other students in the school to experience real life hands on learning about the life cycle and then to apply their knowledge to other areas of science and life outside the walls of the classroom.
My students need an egg incubator and a brooder kit.
Thank you for giving to our egg hatching project. We received the supplies and the children and I looked everything over and discussed the project. They are very excited and curious to know what each supply was used for. We live in a part of the country that is cold and snowy at this time so we will hatch in the spring.
I did this project last year but our supplies did not work very well and the hatching ratio was really low. This year our success rate will be higher due to your help.
This project impacts young minds in many ways. It gives them the opportunity to experience the life cycle of living animals. We have photos of how the chick looks at each of the 21 days so one student will open the plastic egg and we compare the changes that occur. Around day 21 we begin to really observe because the hatching begins. The children are so excited. They come to school early and take their family's with to see the hatching. They also want to name each chick and hold them. They write about the process and they have conversations with each other that are so full of science learning. Other classes take tours of our room to see the hatching project.
Through your donation you have given children a valuable learning experience. One they will remember for years to come. And the best part is that this equipment will be used for many years and will impact many children.
So it is with heartfelt thanks that I send this message. Your commitment to education is priceless.
Mrs. L. sent this note after the project was fully funded:
Our project was fully funded on Thanksgiving Day. What a gift to be thankful for. Your kindness, generosity and commitment to science education for the young is inspiring and Thank You does not seem enough.
Many students this year and in future years will benefit from this project.
Please know that these birds are going to a great home and that we are extremely grateful for your help. I wish you could all be in my classroom to see for yourself the difference you have made.
"I want to thank you for donating to this project. The chickens will come home with me once they are hatched. I have a small chicken farm and they all are near and dear to my heart."

"I gave to this project because
I was prompted by GrrlScientist's blog and I'm a strong believer in science education for everyone"
"I can not wait to share with my class today that we have a new donation to our project. Wish you could hear and see the excitement in the room. A huge thank you to you and all the others."

"I'm not a regular reader of grrlscientist, but she asked so nicely (and persistently). I couldn't afford to fund anyone in full this time, I'm afraid, so I gave to some of the projects that weren't fortunate enough to have cosponsors. I hope somebody picks up the slack."
