This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Pre-K class has 18 bright and energetic four year olds. Our public school has grades Pre-K through eight grade with over 1,000 students, and is a Title One school. Eighty-five percent of the students are eligible for free school lunch.
In recent years education budget cuts have badly hit our school. Classrooms do not have the materials they need for everyday teaching. Most parents try to send in supplies, however many are unable to.
In Pre-K students begin to learn how to write their letters and names. This is many of my students first time holding a pencil. The Jumbo Pencils are made specifically for young children. At four years old they still need to build the muscles needed to hold a pencil. These pencils make it easier for them and help build small motor skills. The Jumbo Pencils do not fit in conventional pencil sharpeners so we need a pencil sharpener that has this ability.
Your donation will make it possible for the students in my class to have the tools they need to start being writers. Writing is a terrific way for children to express their thoughts, creativity, and uniqueness. It is also a fundamental way in which children learn to organize ideas. And learning to write well helps children to be better readers.
