"I teach a group of emergent, inspiring, readers. My classroom is a self-contained special education room with grades first through fourth. My students' disabilities range from learning disabilities, physical disabilities from birth, Autism, and cognitive disabilities. The students and school community are primarily low income. While in my classroom, my students can not take their eyes, ears, and hands off of the books I supply in my library. Sadly, many of my students do not have access to books at home. Research states that a classroom library should be full of a plethora of books in a cozy inviting atmosphere. By creating a comfortable reading area, the students will have a place to get lost in their book, and supplying my students with a library checkout system will allow them to continue their reading at home independently or with their families. In order to provide my students with a comfortable classroom library and a system to check out books, the classroom needs some materials. Just as in a public library the class needs a check out system with library cards. This will make students responsible for keeping track of the books they still have at home. The library checkout system is also a great way for me as the teacher to keep track of the books in my library. The students can help in the beginning of the year by labeling the library cards. This will give them a sense of ownership to their classroom library.
The students I teach can lose concentration and become over or under stimulated easily due to their disabilities. By providing a dim light and bean bag chairs, the classroom library will provide support for their sensory needs while encouraging the students to continue reading. With your help my students will have a classroom library they deserve and need in order to become life long readers! Your help will continue to inspire my students to read, read, read!!!
My students need a Leveled Library Checkout Chart, library cards, a Heavy-Duty Mobile Book Organizer, a lamp, and four bean bag chairs.
The cost of this proposal is $1,225, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."
