Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine being a child in a new classroom with a new teacher and new classmates? Now, can you imagine not understanding a word anyone is saying to you? I am currently going to teach a 4th grade ESL classroom. My school is filled with young parents, single parents and many Hispanic immigrants. I strive each day to provide an environment that makes students and families feel apart of our school community and an environment that allows them to feel safe, loved and cared for each day!
I am taking on a new grade level this year and I have given away some supplies to other first year teachers who were starting out!
I have requested popular childhood games like Uno, Boggle, Connect Four, Scrabble Jr, Clue, Monopoly, Sorry,Mouse Trap, Trouble and Yahtzee. These games promote teamwork and have playing components that I can use alongside my lessons for Math, Language Arts and Science. Some of my students are brand-new to this country, some have been here for a few years and I know school is also the one place they can experience US culture like other children. I want my students to have fun and also be able to learn at the same time. So what better way than to provide games that complement educational lessons they will be learning!
Students are important, but it doesn't stop with them. I also want families to come into my room and be able to see where their children are spending their days and how they are growing and learning and having fun. I want my students to share what they learn at school in their homes as well. With your generosity and help, I know I can continually work hard to give my ESL students a great academic environment and show them a love for learning!
