"I am a first grade teacher in a rural setting in Kentucky. As a teacher, I receive $200 a year for ALL of my classroom supplies, including ink cartridges for my printer, batteries for my clock, and so on. Needless to say, the money does not go very far! Our school system is 70% free and reduced lunch, meaning many families cannot afford donating towards our classroom supplies either.
This year I will be having five special education students and two visually impaired students in my room. I am trying to find ways to help expand learning to students at all levels. One way I can help do this is through individual learning opportunities. Recently, I receive 4 handheld Leapster game systems from donorschoose.org. These game systems are educationally focused to help assist reading and math skills, but in a fun way for kids. Now that I have the Leapsters, I need games! I am requesting many types of games that will be able to be played by children at all levels. I will be able to assign a game to a student as center work, or as something they can do when they complete their work. It also could be used as a reward. I am also requesting four protective cases so that the game systems will hopefully last a long time. In this new generation, we all know that media and technology is what will hold their attention. As a teacher, I realize that if I want to get through to some of these kids, I will have to provide some of that to them. So I want to have fun educational opportunities that the students can participate in the classroom. Learning needs to be fun! I'm sure if you have a child, grandchild, or relative of school age, you have heard complaining about school. Let's make it fun for them, where they can be excited to learn! HIDE My students need Leapster games and cases to be able to use the Leapsters that were already donated to us.
