My students live in an impoverished neighborhood and face many struggles. I teach English Language Arts to mostly ninth graders.
Many of the ninth graders in my class do not like to read or have trouble reading. The required reading in the curriculum, although great, is not for many of my diverse-minded students. I need to get them loving to read and as a result their test scores, success at school, and most importantly, their confidence will rise! I have been putting together a classroom library that will knock the socks of this year's incoming freshman. Seeing so many books of high interest to them and covering so many backgrounds will show these students how reading can be very meaningful for them. Letting students choose their own reading by having books that interest them will be very powerful. They will become stronger readers if they can be enticed to read. So many of my students will improve greatly academically from reading a wider variety of books. Perhaps the enthusiasm for reading will spill over to the required curriculum. Actually, with so much positivity put towards reading and the students' self esteem, I think they will become more active in their classwork. My students need copies of interest grabbing young adult books in every genre to get them reading!
