"I am an urban teacher working with first grade students that are in need of a stimulating and inspiring environment to learn their basic/beginning skills. Our principal promoted many new ideas last year but because of our budget, classrooms did not get the funding necessary to buy "extras" that were needed to make the classrooms look updated and attractive for the students. I tried cleaning the existing materials myself but they are so old and soiled or torn that I ask they be discarded.

Think about a six year old student that comes from a background where their only meals are provided by our school and the only place they feel safe is in our building in their neighborhood. Last year I developed specific strategies in my classroom that promoted successful reading skills with these young children. This year I want to take these a step further and promote books including Magic School Bus, Magic Tree House, Junie B. Jones, and other beginning chapter books for the younger readers. I need funding to turn my plain classroom into a "magical" environment that is functional yet cozy. I have many ideas to make this happen and the large group carpet and two benches will be a great start!

I have the idea of making a "magic" carpet surrounded by a wide selection of books including chapter books in an interesting area that includes a pop-up bus I have already purchased myself, driven by Ms. Frizzle, the Magic School Bus Teacher. I am going to make a paper tree house display in the background with cardboard figures from the various series. My principal has purchased Accelerated Reader this year so this will help to encourage students to read these books as well.

With your help, I will be able to create the perfect environment for these young minds. You can make the difference! I have a lot of motivation but I need funding to help make this possible for these youngsters. The parents at our school are very supportive but they are financially poor.
