Learning to read opens up a new world to children. I am lucky enough to teach in an inclusive first grade classroom where I can see this phenomenon every day. My students range in age from 6-7 years. We are a small school located in a transitioning rural community in Wisconsin.

One of the most effective methods for teaching students to read is through the process of making words. Making words is an activity in which children are given carefully selected letters of the alphabet. They are challenged to make words using these letters and then sort the words into word patterns. Finally, they have to make one “big” word using all of the letters. Children learn letter-sound relationships, word patterns, spelling patterns, prefixes, suffixes, and syllable principles all from one activity! I would love to use Making Words as a regular classroom and center activity. Unfortunately, I simply don’t have the materials I need to do so.

I am asking for making words pocket charts that include multiple letter cards as well as a classroom set of magnetic letters that I could use for demonstration. Children would be able to use these pocket charts at their desks to make words independently or with a partner. They are small, portable, and house all the materials a student would need for the activity.
