"Low-income, African-American, rural students. Resistant to traditional methods of learning and teaching. The state standards and district curriculum maps require my students to learn, analyze, and create poetry. Particularly for these students, poetry is boring and unaccessible. I have few resources to add to their textbook texts. This book will tap into the audio element of poetry, connecting it to rap music and helping students understand the connection to their everyday lives and interests. This study will lead to a student understanding and use of the elements of poetry and allow them to create their own poetry for a poetry slam at the end of the unit. You will make it possible for my students to access poetry at their interest level and create works.
My students need 25 copies of "Hip Hop Speaks to Children" to engage them in learning, understanding, and analyzing the elements of poetry and to help them in their reading and writing of poetry.

Dear Coastal Community Foundation, Katey and Tracie and Loves to Read,
Thank you so much for your generous donations that will allow us to purchase a class set of Hip Hop Speaks to Children. I am so excited to introduce poetry to my students in a way that is different from their norm. You have given them an opportunity to enjoy interacting with poetry on a more common ground. We will be able to explore metaphors, similes, imagery, and other figurative devices beyond simply seeing them written on a page. Ialso plan to introduce this book to the English teachers of the other grade levels in our school so that it can be enjoyed throughout the school and heighten all of our students' experiences with poetry. With many thanks, Mrs. Z With gratitude, Mrs. Z.
