"I am a new kindergarten teacher! I just graduated from Butler University in Indianapolis and began the incredibly difficult job search this spring. My prayers were answered when I was offered a kindergarten teaching job (my DREAM job!!!) about a month ago. I am in a moderate-poverty, suburban-urban area and would love to start off my first year teaching with the best classroom possible for my students!

I recently was shown what is to be my kindergarten classroom and was shocked when I first walked in. There are just desks-no tables. For 5 and 6 year-olds! How could that be? I greatly favor hands-on, group, experiential learning, which I believe would be a great challenge with a room full of desks. How are my students supposed to communicate with one another and form a sense of community? How will I do small group lessons with only desks for the students to be seated at? How can I implement my much favored Reggio Emilia and Montessori style teaching with something so developmentally inappropriate for my students? Kindergarten is many students first glimpse of the education world and what is to come in the future-I want to empower them with a close-knit, community and group learning feel of my classroom. Tables would help me do this.

I will need seating for approximately 22 kindergarten students. By giving our class tables, the students will form a better sense of community with one another, and be able to fully engage in better hands on, small group learning. They won't feel trapped to one desk or designated spot, rather encouraged to make a positive choice on their own, fostering independence, and decide where to sit based on their learning needs. Desks are not for kindergarten! They are not part of my philosophy of teaching.

I want my first year teaching to be a powerful and enlightening one. With appropriate seating for my young students, I will be able to engage as a class the way I have learned to love through my time at University. Your help will enable me to teach in such a way that each child has their individual needs met, due to small group lessons and a strong sense of community.

My students need 4 small children's tables to sit at instead of the desks we currently have.
