"Presentation is one of the fundamental traits that make a project or piece of writing outstanding.  With the budget cuts this year, any art materials that students have to use on their work will either come from the school's very meager offerings, or from a cache of treasures donated by you.

I am a multiple subjects, third grade teacher in a K-5, urban, elementary school.  Many of the students here are English language learners who speak a lot of Spanish in their homes. Our school has a balanced focus on art and academics, teaching art skills in labs, and using art as a method for integrating curriculum.

I have found that great materials produce great results.  It is because great materials inspire students to new heights of creativity that they wouldn't find by using a box of 16 crayons.  We are asking our students to perform higher and achieve more than ever before, while resources continue shrinking.  Teachers are not the only ones feeling the pressure.  Students want to bring everything they've got to the "table", but cannot do their best without motivation and materials.  It is up to us to do everything we can for them to help them along their way.

In my classroom, we will share these materials so that everyone doesn't have to have one of their own.  This helps to create good social skills, and teaches children the importance of taking good care of classroom resources. Children learn to organize items so they will be in good shape for the next person using them. They are taught to be respectful and careful so everything will last for a long time.

We need an assortment of basic (and some frivolous) art materials that can be used by individuals and groups when completing projects. Examples where art integrates well with academics are in the writing of poetry and completion of work with related border drawings, illustrating a personal narrative, drawing and showing equivalent fractions, or journal writing with illustrations over several weeks to show the growth of a plant.  Art can be used in so many ways to inspire students to make a finished product sensational.

Your donation will allow my students to really enjoy what they have to do, and inspire them to do their very best work.  The donation will bring forth a feeling of pride in workmanship in their little hearts.  Don't you think that would be great? hide»

My students need 27 different art supplies, such as water color paints and brushes, various types of paper, and an assortment of pens, crayons, and pencils. details»

Dear Craig Newmark,

Thank you for your very generous donations for art materials. It is uplifting and inspiring for the students to have so many choices of mediums to use to create beauty and style within and around their work.

My students used the metallic watercolors to paint birds for a piece to sell at our school's annual fundraising auction, and they worked perfectly to to create the luminous quality of feathers. We used the special, ebony, drawing pencils for some awesome portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The colored pencils are in constant use for everything from science drawings to challenge word illustrations and everything in-between. We used the origami paper to make beautiful frames for school photos. The Tru-ray construction paper is far superior to the regular kind, and the green made a lovely folder to hold all the work students produced in their studies of plants.

I could go on and on telling you how useful your gift has been and continues to be. Everyday we appreciate something you gave us as we use it for an assignment or on a project. As the school budget really shrank this year, we appreciate your donation more than ever. We would never have been able to provide these resources for ourself. Your donation is like a little oasis in the desert! Know that your money was well spent.

Once again, Thank you from our hearts.

With gratitude,
Ms. Engler

Dear Craig Newmark,

My heart was filled with excitement and joy when I saw that this request for art materials has been funded. Although the school is doing the best it can to provide art supplies, my classroom barely has the basics. These extra special materials will allow us to do exquisite work throughout the curriculum. You have made 21 people very happy and inspired!

My students are currently working an a monster owner's manual, which requires them to do descriptive and creative writing. They have just invented and drawn the monsters, and are beginning the writing. Perhaps the materials will arrive in time for them to use the watercolors to complete the picture of the monster. Last year, my class made the same manuals, and we collected them into a classroom book. It was the most popular book on the shelf.

We will also be able to use the materials for science observation journals, posters to show comprehension of science and social studies concepts....the sky is the limit. Know that you have provided something something very wonderful to motivate my students and help elicit their very best work. We will be presenting some excellent work in the classroom and the hallways thanks to you. Your donation is so very appreciated.

With gratitude,
Ms. E
