I teach first grade in a small, rural, community school in South Carolina. Our school does not qualify for extra funding like many schools in our district so we lack some necessary resources for our children.

First graders are eager to read and want to get their hands on all kinds of books. As they enter first grade, many are non-readers. Books on CD allow them to match the story heard to the words in the books on an individual basis.

The students need to hear stories read aloud over and over to give them exposure to common words and sentence structures. I have requested books as multiple copies, and CDs so that the students would have access to more literature during our center time. The students can choose to listen to a story with friends. This promotes oral language as well because after listening to the book, the students discuss the story. Students will listen to the stories over and over as they continue to absorb the language and reading skills. There are many different titles I am requesting here so that students will also be introduced to different authors and literature styles.

The purchase of these books and CDs will create better readers in my students. Thank you for your help to get great literature to the younger generation.
