Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The trick to not hating math is discovered on a 200-page journey led by a little figure called the number devil! I teach 8th grade general math and Algebra 1 at a low-income, majority Hispanic, Kinder-8th grade school in Arizona. Most of my students were born in Mexico and are children of migrant workers. Each one, however, thirsts for knowledge and wants to a difference later in life.

By the time they reach 8th grade, many students have decided that they simply hate the subject of math. This often stems from the fact that many of these students have experienced continual failures in math class. While I spent class time trying to inspire kids to enjoy math, I want to use the book "The Number Devil" as another way to show students that math is fun. Additionally, by incorporating this book into my math class, I hope to increase my students' reading abilities.

To complete my mission, I need 30 copies of "The Number Devil." The purpose of using this book in my classroom is threefold. Firstly, I am using the book to show my students that math can be a truly enjoyable experience. Secondly, the book incorporates a number sense ideas (i.e. rational and irrational numbers, prime and composite numbers) that reinforce what I am teaching in my classroom. Finally, I want to use "The Number Devil" in my classroom to help boost my students' reading abilities.

Your help will ensure that my students begin to draw the connection between math and reading. By helping bring these books into my classroom, my students will see that reading and math no longer have to be considered separate subjects. Please help bring a love of reading and math to my classroom.
