Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Captain Underpants say, "Struggling students deserve our support!" I work in an extremely highly affected school, where many of our students will be the first in their families to finish high school or even think about college as a possible option for their futures.

For so long, my students have felt neglected by the community--newer, fancier schools were built, providing "those other kids" with all sorts of support and resources, but our community seems to have been left behind. Our kids have a hard time staying positively focused on their potential--which is immense--when all around them they see signs that lead them to feel otherwise. One of their greatest weaknesses has been literacy, both in English and, for many, in their native Spanish. We are making great headway with these students in their reading and writing, but they still are wary of books and mistrusting of the enjoyment that can come from them. You can help us change that!

We want to start the school year off on the right foot. Working with enthusiastic teachers at all levels across our part of the district, we'd like to see our students reading to each other. For some, this will be simply a chance to relive their favorite childhood tales; for others, a chance to fine tune their pronunciation in Spanish; for many, it will be a chance to interact with the written word in a non-threatening and fun way, a theme we then want to bring back into the classroom. By helping to create this library of enjoyable reading materials, our students will be reading with and to each other at the High School, as well as to Elementary and Middle School students as well. Engendering them with a true enjoyment of literature--of all sorts--will help them start to connect with the power of reading and how it will help prepare them for the reading that they will do after school, in college, and in life.

With your support, our kids can win on so many fronts. They will learn to see reading as something enjoyable and fun, and they will improve their reading abilities along the way, since you can't improve your literacy skills in one language without it also having a positive impact on others. Finally, a gift of this sort from the community will remind these students that they, too, are supported and encouraged to strive for their very best. For many of our students, this is truly the most important--and most glaringly missing--part of the equation.
