About My Students

I have a group of high school seniors who share a love for science, and want to help others discover their passion. This year, we are planning to host a STEM Celebration Day for all high school students in the area. We anticipate at least 240 participants from all grade levels and ability levels. This will consist of various competitions from researching and testing to building projects like an electric power airplane. We have built a culture at our school where it is cool to be smart and love science. Everyone is encouraged to participate, regardless of their past success in science, and we currently serve about one quarter of the school's population. We believe that getting kids excited about science in a non-threatening atmosphere builds confidence and ultimately results in increased success in the classroom for all students. Our new goal is to draw in other schools from the local area to spread our enthusiasm. Eva is our fearless leader. Alongside her is the leadership team of Ari, Ben, Ben, Bianca, Drake, Elizabeth, Elsie, Hailey, Jordyn, Katie, Lucas, Nicole, Nikhil, Nina, and Zach, as well as the supply management team of Jack and Tadeusz.

There are countless skills to be gained through this experience. Many students will be put into situations that require leadership skills, and all will be challenged to work together on a team of two or three to participate in STEM-related events. Students will research, design, build and compete in various science events. Most of the groups competing together will have never met before joining Sehome's science club, and most are in different grades as well. With seniors working with freshman, and football players with members of the bowling team, this event is truly more than just a celebration of science; it's a celebration of diversity, cooperation, and the fun of learning.

In Their Own Words

With this project we hope to raise enough money to purchase the materials we need for their STEM Celebration Day events. Without the materials this project funds, we would be unable to participate in events that have sparked their interest, or continue exploring fields of study they're excited about. Our ultimate goal is to generate excitement for the sciences, in hopes of creating passionate, life long learners. The funds this project will provide help make this a possibility. We are asking for money for building supplies like wood, glue, foam, batteries, and balloons. Additionally we need some equipment upgrades such as new drill bits and hot glue guns. Finally we are requesting funds to expand our science library to include additional field guides to rocks and minerals and amphibians.

Our science department has long understood the importance of student leadership, and 30 of us are student representatives and organizers helping to coordinate projects every year. We fundraise, organize, schedule, plan, communicate and essentially run the entire club. I've been involved in this group for two years now. Helping to run the STEM celebration this year is a unique opportunity in which I'm thrilled to take part in, allowing me to further my leadership skills even more. I'm particularly excited to delve into the inter workings of an event like this in organizing volunteers, coordinating food and supplies for such a big crowd, and making sure students have the most rewarding day of STEM possible.

By hosting our own STEM celebration, we students will explore our passions and develop interests in a variety of scientific fields of study. The welcoming and non-competitive environment we have created allows students who may be hesitant to participate feel welcome. Since we are able to involve students from all grades and social circles, students will also meet new people and have the chance to interact with peers they may not have otherwise. Additionally the people volunteering at the event include alumni, parents, and community members. We also work with our local university to host college volunteers. This provides an opportunity for students to network and learn about post high school opportunities from people actually working in STEM fields. With all of the challenges we face it is imperative that we have students with the skills and motivation needed to go forward in STEM education.
