"My students have completed a year of restoring 6000 square feet of an endangered native plant community on our school campus and over one acre of land in the local National Park. The National Park Service and local Audubon Chapter have adopted our school in a joint project to restore acres of endangered Coastal Sage Brush ecosystem and learn about the wildlife in a suburban National Park property near our school.
Through our students dedication to the environment they now have the opportunity to continue to reach beyond our campus and learn, not only about the animals, but the people and groups that are here to protect our natural resources.
It all started with a donation of 40 refurbished binoculars from a parent that worked at Vivitar 10 years ago. Over 3000 regular and special education students have used these binoculars to study and survey the animals on campus. The students have observed and identified over 35 species on campus and in the National Park. I started an Environmental Horticulture elective four years ago from idea to conception. We have over 400 regular and special needs students complete the course each year.
This class is designed to not only observe nature but to change it through landscaping on campus and local parks. Through the years many binoculars have broke and I feel a need to replace and upgrade to higher quality tools.
The original binoculars were not designed for the heavy use of 400 students a year. Many times students went without working binoculars. Students not working with the tools do not get to experience the magical moments that may occur, because the animal has fled before they get a chance to look. Upgraded binoculars and the new field guide will allow the students to better observe and identify animals in the field.
Their positive experience at school will lead them to explore the world around their own home. Over the years, many students have come to me the next day to tell me what they observed at their own home or how they have provided food to attract them. Your gift will touch hundreds of lives for years by letting them observe and understand the natural world out of the classroom.
My students need 1 pair of binoculars and 1 copy of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of Western North America.
The cost of this proposal is $162, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment Live Updates
