"Where that come from? I teach in a rural school located in a low income area of a low income state. My students, grades 4-6, require special education services. Project based learning helps motivate them to stick with tasks that can be challenging and frustrating for them. Projects that relate to their lives while broadening their horizons are extremely important for their future.

Given our rural setting, students have limited access to people from other cultures. They often have misinformation about people that do not fit their idea of "normal." This limits their ability to explore new ideas and often keeps students from reaching their potential.

Our school is an extremely low income area of our state, so parents have little funds to take students to cities were they can explore museums and meet people from other cultures. As the world continues to grow smaller in terms of daily interaction, students must be able to appreciate others with different backgrounds.

The globe in my classroom is very old and some of the countries no longer exist or have changed names. Furthermore, the writing has worn off on several areas. I do a project each year with the students where they research the origin of their surname and learn what that country has contributed to their daily life and family traditions. Students use the Internet, family interviews, and books to help them with their research. We end the project with an English tea party using antique tea cups that were passed to me from my grandmother. Students are invited to bring a food item from their country to share with the class. I have several copies of the "Look What Came From.." series, but need to add to the class library to provide opportunity for all students to have access to books at their reading level. Often students have the same family origin, so I invite them to choose a different country that has not been taken by another student. This individualized approach has made a difference for the students at this grade level because it focuses directly on their lives.

You will make it possible for my students to gain appreciation of all cultures and develop a respect for other people.

My students need a globe and 4 individual copies each of 5 books in the "Look What Came From..." series.

Mrs. C. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dec 7, 2009
Dear Kristin,
Thank you so much for funding our project " Where Did I Come From?" Your generous donation will help my students understand the ways all countries contribute to their daily life. This project also helps them develop and understand their own roots. Many of my students have not had the opportunity to travel outside of Maine. This type of exploration helps them build curiosity and develop dreams.
Again, I please accept my heartfelt thank-you. Your gift will make an immediate impact on my students' lives. Hopefully, their newly developed appreciation for the many countries of our world will inspire them to look at the world in a new way.

With gratitude,
Mrs. C.

"I helped because my daughter (in 3rd grade) really enjoys reading and writing. She also enjoys learning about other cultures. I'm happy to help out, and hope that you enjoy learning about other places."

"Thank you so much for funding this project. We really have needed a new globe! Just today we were using it to find Kuwait, and it appeared that Kuwait was part of Saudi Arabia because the border lines have worn off. The books are great, and I will be glad to add the new countries to our library. I hope your daughter continues to love reading throughout her life."

"Thank you notes were mailed yesterday. I hope Kristen and her daughter enjoy reading them. My students were stunned when they realized how much money was donated to purchase the globe and books for them. We talked about the importance of giving when they are able. Again, thank you for providing my students an opportunity to learn about other cultures."
