Copies of Brideshead Revisited Desperately Needed!

My students need 16 copies of Evelyn Waugh's classic novel "Brideshead Revisited" for their Advanced Placement Literature course.

My students are truly excited about the brand-new AP Literature and Composition course being offered at our school. I will be teaching this course, as well as British Literature, American Literature, and College Summit. Since the school district is currently in debt and rapidly losing students, they cannot afford to pay for any additional books for the classroom. The books for my other classes have already been purchased, and there just are no more funds for this AP class.

The texts for my AP class will all ask the following questions: Who are you? How do you form an identity? Which social groups do you most identify with and why? Evelyn Waugh's novel, Brideshead Revisited, will be the last we read of the year, and it does a wonderful job of addressing the issue of identity and how one's identity is shaped by many societal factors. Each text we will read during the year will be more difficult, all building up to this text, that is thematically and grammatically intense. However, I really believe in challenging my students, and this text, with its diverse themes and motifs, will do just that.

With your help, I can actually purchase 16 copies of these books, and keep preparing students for college-level reading, writing, and participation in discussions. All of my AP students plan on attending accredited four-year universities, and this book will, in many ways, prepare them for some of the rigorous texts they will encounter in a first- or second-year English class. Also, this text will prepare them for the types of passages they will have to wrestle with on their Advanced Placement exam.

It is because of donors such as yourself that I have been able to supply past classes with high-level texts such as "A Separate Peace." Your contributions mean so much to students; they feel special and more motivated to do their reading and essays, because they do not want to let the donors down.
