My students need 20 pedometers that count total number of steps.

My kids are all on free lunch and most walk to school or ride a bus. We are a minority school in a low socio-economic area. The majority of my kids have single parents with several children in each family. Our fitness scores revealed a large number of my kids were overweight with a high BMI.

My students don't have safe places to play in the neighborhood surrounding the school. There is only one park in the area and it is not in very good shape. We need something to help these kids stay active and learn at the same time.Our math scores were very low this year and I wanted to improve them by getting the kids moving and having fun with math at the same time.

With a class set of 20 pedometers, my kids can do various physical activities with partners and complete math tasks. I attended a workshop that included worksheets that utilized pedometers with such things as greater than,less than,odd and even numbers etc. Pairs of students work together to record each others scores on the worksheet and participate in each physical activity.The activities can be dribbling a basketball, jumping rope or walking through the halls on the 1/2 mile path that is marked on the floor with a blue tile line. Scores from the pedometers can be added, subtracted, multiplied or divided depending on the age of the student. Research has proven that students retain information longer if they are physically involved.
