I teach sixth grade math and science at a high need school where 98% of my students live in poverty.

A lot of my students do not have any type of technology at home. The smallest technology tool motivates my students and get them more involved in the lesson. I taught a lesson about multiplying and dividing very large numbers using the calculator. My students had to use the old solar calculators that were in my room when I got there. A lot of the calculators did not work so it took a lot of time to start the lesson. When we did get started, the students were very involved in the lesson. They started asking a lot of questions about other operations that they could do on the calculator.

The students will benefit from having calculators in the classroom because the calculators will reinforce their math skills, enhance their math skills for the next grade,and they will gain experience by exploring the various abilities of the calculator. Students will have the tools they need to be compatible and accomplished math students.
