Our world demands that students and workers are capable of problem solving and thinking skills unlike any other time in history. Creating opportunities for such is paramount and, the earlier in a career, the better. This project is aimed at two age groups: Kindergarten - 1st and Sophomores and Juniors in high school. Both groups consist of students from diverse economic backgrounds with about 35% below the level for free and reduced lunch. The youngest have never been involved with robotics or programming and their STEM experience is minimal, at best.
Our school is in West Virginia and we know, all too well, what can happen when the world changes and you don't.
I am seeking to pair high school students (as mentor/helpers) with 6 - 7 year olds for a mutually beneficial, collaborative experience. Our high school students rarely get to work with younger students and yet, their example is a powerful asset in energizing younger ones. Likewise, the exuberance of our newest students can remind the older ones just how exciting the learning experience is.
My Project
My students are really interested robotics. The Lego WeDo kits are perfect for the K- 1 age group. We can focus on the problem and potential solutions without being bogged down by difficult and fussy technology. The materials and programming interface are specifically suited for this age group. Moreover, the structure of the FIRST Lego League is such that I can incorporate the help of high school students to work 1-on-1 with the younger ones to set an amazing example of what their future could look like. The "lesson plans" are well constructed to allow for ease of implementation regardless of experience and skill level.
I really want to erase the fallacy that STEM is a male-dominated field, as well as, being only for geeks.
The high school students interested in helping are predominantly female and interested in a variety of subjects with vibrant and varied extracurricular lives. In return, I expect the high school students will reconnect to the wonder of discovery and learning to serve them through their remaining high school and college years. I see this as a win-win for all and having the tools/parts to make it happen is our missing ingredient.
