Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

What is the biggest thing in the ocean? How do snails move? How does an airplane fly? Read all about it! Children need access to the nonfiction reading that will bridge the gap for students who have few books in their homes. You can help my students engage with science, social studies, mathematics, music and art. I teach first grade, and my students have intense interest in the world around them and how it works. They are interested in a variety of subjects, and are constantly seeking books to support their interests. I teach in an elementary school with close to 900 students from a wide range of backgrounds. Many of my students have very little access to literature in their homes, all my students are interested in learning about the world around them, and quality nonfiction selections in their classroom library will meet this need.

Inquiring minds want to know...and we do know that students in classrooms with excellent libraries (750 or more quality books of varied reading level and content) experience substantial growth in reading compared to students in classrooms without quality libraries. Inquiring minds want to know...and we do know from recent research that nonfiction books are essential to address student interests, increase domain knowledge, and lead to higher reading achievement. Inquiring minds want to know...and my students want to know about dinosaurs, animals, volcanoes, sports, race cars, China, Africa, the bottom of the ocean, and the top of the mountain! I have built a good classroom fiction library with many childhood favorites and current selections. However, my classroom library does not contain enough nonfiction titles to meet the needs of my students.

The Rookie Readers Biographies I have selected will give my students the opportunity to read about and be inspired by the outstanding people who have shaped our country and our world - from George Washington to Thurgood Marshall, Michael Jordan, Marie Curie and Rosa Parks to name a few. These books are written on a beginning first grade level, and will give all children easy access to the stories of the world's greatest citizens. The Eyewitness Nonfiction series presents engaging nonfiction titles on a variety of topics and in a range of reading levels from beginning to 4th grade. These books will give my students with a wide range of reading levels access to appropriate and informative nonfiction texts. The Life Cycles nonfiction and Weather nonfiction sets directly support two of my science curriculum units. The books in each set are written at beginning to more advanced levels so that readers of differing abilities can share and discuss books on the same topics. These nonfiction books will bring my classroom library up to date, and provide my students with the tools they need to read, comprehend, respond to, discuss, and analyze nonfiction texts.

You will open the doors to the world for my students when you help fund this project. Students will have the opportunity to study content-related topics in depth with nonfiction titles that are engaging and appropriate to their reading levels. Research shows that nonfiction genres represent 84% of adult real world texts, as well as a similar amount of reading passages of standardized tests. Surveys show that students choose twice as many information books as novels from their school libraries. You can help me transform my classroom library into a library brimming with nonfiction texts, and improve the reading achievement and content learning of all of my students for years to come.
