"Students need hands-on experiences in science to encourage them to pursue careers in science. I teach 6-8 grade science at a high poverty school in Wisconsin. Often my students do not have the background and hands-on experiences that other students are exposed to. If students are not exposed to hand-on inquiry experiences they often do not pursue advanced science classes in high school and careers in science. In order to continue to offer these hands-on experiences we need money for supplies. Our students' families often are at the poverty level and simply cannot afford to cover the costs of consumable lab materials. Our school budget has decreased every year to the point where our science budget is nil.
By offering these experiences I can help give them the edge they may need to succeed in science. I have dissected frogs in science for many years and I still have students who come to me and state that this was a very memorable experience and it helped them in their high school biology classes. I do realize that some students may be against using once-living specimens for science and I do respect that decision with no consequences. Your donations help my students to experience a hands-on investigation that is memorable for a life-time. This experience may spark an interest in pursuing advanced level courses in high school and science careers in college and help keep the United States at the top of our game in science and technology advances.
My students need 3 frog dissection kits, disposable gloves and scalpels and 40 owl pellets.
The cost of this proposal is $549, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear Traci, Connie, Jay, Kate, Carolyn, Alyn, Therese, Sili, Amanda and John Campbell, Raleigh, Gregg, Szn, Joey, Sherri, Taylor, Katharine, Steve, Katelyn, Swordfish Sisters, Nahtahna, Bud & Diane and Anonymous Donors,
I don't even know how to begin to thank you. My students often do not have the background experiences to help them to better learn the science content we are studying. When we have hands-on experiences in my classroom this helps my students understand the science concept better. The materials you provided will allow my students to see organs and systems that make up an organism. This will help them greatly when we are studying anatomy. Once again, thank you so much for providing this experience for my students. Your donations are invaluable to my classroom. With gratitude, Mrs. V.

"I gave to this project because I'm a university student studying biology and I know it's vital to get exposure to actual organisms to study their anatomy."
"I can't thank you enough, my students really enjoy working with actual organisms, they are extremely respectful!"

"I gave to this project because my husband and I are both in college to study sciences: physics and zoology. When I was in 5th grade, my science teacher made a huge impression on me and planted the seed that led to my decision to pursue science. We both strongly believe in providing kids with excellent science curriculum in K-12 schools!"
"I gave to this project because of GirlScientist's webpage."
"I gave to this project because I used to be a science teacher in a low income area, and I know how challenging it is to acquire the real science supplies necessary to keep the students excited about and competitive in science."
"Thank you... My students get so excited when they have hands on experiences!"

"I'm not a regular reader of grrlscientist, but she asked so nicely (and persistently). I couldn't afford to fund anyone in full this time, I'm afraid, so I gave to some of the projects that weren't fortunate enough to have cosponsors. I hope somebody picks up the slack."
"I helped because I'm a strong believer in Health & Life Science education."
"I donated because I want to support kids in Wisconsin."
"I can't thank everyone enough! I am overwhelmed by the support we are receiving!"
